How to improve your tango even when you don’t have a fixed partner

Tango seems unique in that many newcomers think that following a few lessons, either in a group or privately, is enough to get into social dancing.

The standard approach for beginning tango students is usually to attend classes for an arbitrary period, after which they jump straight into attending milongas.

It is not a surprise, then, that their typical first experience of social tango dancing is frustrating.

The length of such periods varies. Regardless, the result is often the same. Nothing seems to work; students can’t remember what they did in the classes, and nobody wants to dance with them.

Our tango syllabus for constant progress

This is the incremental syllabus we follow in our classes.

It is based on years of study and experience teaching students of different levels.

It is currently a work in progress, developed through our interactions with students, and remains incomplete and prone to change.

How the program is applied in our classes will be covered by a separate document.

A structural language for tango sequences

For a long time, I felt the need for some sort of language to write down tango sequences.

The occasions are many.

  • Sometimes I am at a workshop, and I want to write down the sequences we studied.
  • Some other times, I see something interesting in a performance, and I want to jot it down.
  • And finally, I often need to note down what to teach in class or what I need to practice with my partner.
